Health Promoting Leaders Institute

The Health Promoting Leadership Institute (HPLI) is Healthy New Orleans’ premier leadership development program, working to educate, empower and connect local government, civic, social, business and religious leaders who take responsibility not only for their own health, but the health of others around them by encouraging participation in health promotion activities.

  • Four-month intensive leadership development program focused on health, nutrition, mental health, and creating healthy environments;

  • A competitively selected class of participants who are leaders in their fields, organizations and communities;

  • A format structured to strengthen leadership skills, promote curiosity, and foster openness;

  • Strategically curated content designed to challenge the thoughts, assumptions, experiences and opinions of participants through presentations, panel discussions, guest speakers, and pre-work; and,

  • Experiential learning and concept reinforcement.

Application Process

Applications for the Health Promoting Leaders Institute are accepted each fall over a 4-week period. The application can be completed online. The following pieces of information are required:

Though the Health Promoting Leaders Institute is primarily focused on business, government and non-profit leaders, the HPLI selection committee seeks to identify 30 leaders who are most likely to use the HPLI experience to expand Healthy New Orleans’ mission to make New Orleans a Top-10 healthiest city in America. The program seeks both acknowledged and aspiring leaders, but places a premium on ensuring its participants reflect the diversity of the City of New Orleans. As a result, the committee is asked to take into consideration the following:

  • Race

  • Gender Identity

  • Ethnicity

  • Geographic Location

  • Industry/Sector

  • Position, title or organizational rank

  • Professional background

  • Civic Involvement

Approximately 4 weeks after the close of the application period, letters of notification regarding selection to the program will be sent out via e-mail to participants. If selected, applicants are responsible for the program tuition of $350.
